Does not deal with hoarding -- although it's mentioned and some not-so-obvious ways are introduced to think about your stuff...."does it need me?" vs "do I need it?" :)

Book's focus is how to organize, but rather than a "one size ...

5 Stages of Change for Compulsive Hoarding

People can and do change, either by themselves or with the help of

therapy, either self directed or with the assistance of a therapist.

James Prochaska, Ph.D, and his colleagues have spent years studying

and researching how people change and they have determined that

people change in stages.

They define these stages as

1) PRECONTEMPLATION

2) CONTEMPLATION

3) PREPARATION

A site with lots of info on simplicity and simplifying your life. Very large site, have not looked everywhere, but stumbled on this article somehow.

This is a 'tough love' comment, but it really made an impact on me. Number 13 on the list.

Internalize that your value is not in your “stuff”. It is just “stuff”. And realize that your value grows when you share your “stuff”. Hoarding is a selfish act.

What is so hard about that anyway?

I seem to have trouble doing the final step in the process and it gets me all the time.

For example:

-- putting dishes away from dishwasher and not leaving them on the counter

-- submitting final paperwork for insurance

--folding and putting away laundry after it has been washed

There are other examples, but -- why is that so hard.

I think it has to do with being a perfectionist and not wanting to make a mistake and ...

I realize that some of us might not have alot of room in their eating area. Mine was always pretty serviceable, but there was a ton of stuff on the counters. Piles and stuff sliding all over. But, there wasn't stuff all over the floor, well, just lining the walls -- ok! Still, we managed to be able to clean the table off for meals.

Now, the table is pretty clear most of the time -- yay!!! And, the food prep counters are pretty clutter free. There is this one counter, though, but ...

Part of this whole thing, I think, is chronic disorganization, which isn't really discussed much insofar as the hoarding seems to be the main issue.

I am pretty good at setting things up, but not so much at maintaining them and that is where the disorginization starts. I think.

So, part of this whole thing has been to try to establish routines and stick to them.

One of my routines is to throw out old catalogs the minute the new one comes in.

I don't really mind washing it or folding it even.

But I hate, hate, hate putting it away.

I don't really know why.

It might have something to do w/my childhood in that I could never fold things neatly enough for mom. I was routinely 'busted' for keeping a messy drawer. So, maybe this whole thing is genetic. Still...I now let my kids put away their own clothes the way they want...with a few regular adjustments every ...

Anyway, to donate to this charity is sometimes hard, as it used to take them 3 weeks to come out for a pickup (for large items). The stores that I can donate to are at least 30 minutes from my house. Not all stores take donations.

If a child lives with criticism, they learn to condemn.

If a child lives with hostility, they learn to fight.

If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive,

If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves,

If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.

If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty,
