5 Stages of Change for Compulsive Hoarding

People can and do change, either by themselves or with the help of

therapy, either self directed or with the assistance of a therapist.

James Prochaska, Ph.D, and his colleagues have spent years studying

and researching how people change and they have determined that

people change in stages.

They define these stages as

1) PRECONTEMPLATION

2) CONTEMPLATION

3) PREPARATION

4) ACTION

5) MAINTENANCE

Change is hard. When you change, sometimes other people don't like it. They are used to you being a certain way. Maybe they are used to you being their dumping ground for some of their own compulsive purchases? Hmmm....Maybe they know you can't say 'no'.

Don't misunderstand, I am not blaming others. But, sometimes others aren't helpful, especially when you are trying to affect a positive change in your own life and for some reason that invalidates or is an insult to them about their own lifestyle. ...

Here are some things that I wish people would not do to me/my family:

Give me two of everything.

Buy the "whole set" and give it to me (or my kids) at once, when it is something that could be gotten over time and worked towards.

Overload me with candy and other "treats" when you know I have a weight issue. Overload my kids with more candy than they can eat before the next holiday.

Give me something with strings attached.

I am going to start listing some things that I have gotten rid of recently.....that I have either tossed out without remorse or donated to charity or others. Anyone else? Throw your own "donations" on the pile of messages and we'll see how big the pile gets!

This is kind of drastic, but I think sometimes "what would I do if I only had "x" number of years to live? Or, only one year to live? Well, we all have a finite time to live, but what if that end were imminent? Sometimes this helps motivate me and I ask myself these kinds of questions:

-- do I want to leave this earth having this mess as my legacy?

-- what about all my unrealized plans?

-- what about my children and all of the things I have promised them?

-- what will their ...

Wanted to say 'hi' to anyone out there reading. I am new to this forum and looking for positive support and encouragement. I consider myself a recovering shop-a-holic and person with hoarding tendencies (I was not an extreme hoarder, but definitely have / had issues). Through much self reflection and internet reading and research, I have managed to turn my situation around over the past several years.

In true "perfectionist" fashion, I had a long email written up about my whole ...
