Every week, no matter what, on Sunday night I clean out the refrigerator.
No matter if we haven't eaten it.
If it is not good, I throw it out.
If we will not eat, it I throw it out.
If there is any chance that it is not good, I throw it out.
I actually waste less food than I did before because my fridge is usually clean and I can see what I have.
I use see through containers so I can see what I have in there and how much is left. I bought all the same kind (over time) so that most of them are the same. I have a few odds and ends, but my rule now is that they must be see-through. Otherwise, I forget what's in them.
